Whether you have heard of active bullying occurring in your child’s school or your child has had to deal with a bully once before, you may worry whether or not your child will be prepared to make the right decisions if he/she were put in such a high pressure situation.   Childhood bullying can have both short and long term effects even if the bullying has diminished.  Children who experience being bullied usually undergo depression, low self esteem, or decreased confidence.  These effects can also cause a child to do poorly in school or become more anti-social with other students.
While most schools have a no tolerance program for schoolyard fights and bullying; this is only effective when the bullying is brought to a teacher’s or administrator’s attention.  To ensure your child’s safety while he/she is at school, your child must learn the skills to handle and resolve bullying before any physical actions are to occur.  The best way is to enroll your child into a martial arts program.  Studies show that children who take martial arts perform better in school, develop healthier, improved decision-making, and become less likely to be influenced by their peers.
You may wonder, “How will martial arts really help my child when it’s teaching him/her acts of violence?”  Although you may see actors or actresses beating up other characters in action movies or television, this is far from what martial arts is really about.  Mixed martial arts/MMA consists of several styles that have been around for hundreds of years.  These arts are also called ‘disciplines’ for a reason; they promote self discipline as well as control over emotions and the mind.  While there is a variety of types and styles of martial arts, overall, martial arts training is based on non-violence and well-rounded, moral teachings.  Most kids’ activities and sports are centered around fierce competitiveness and solely winning.  However, children in martial arts programs learn not just the sport, but mental and emotional lessons as well.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a discipline that consists of grappling and ground-fighting techniques.  This martial art discipline can teach kids to be stronger, have heightened confidence, and become less prone to being bullied.  With Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a child can gain self-esteem, learn the meaning of respect and courtesy, and can achieve better focus and concentration.  BJJ’s basis focuses on how a smaller or weaker person can defend themselves against a larger opponent through the use of leverage and flexibility.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJprovides children with the knowledge and skills to handle bullying and other social elements they may be vulnerable to with making intelligent decisions or protecting oneself.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu “A Game of Human Chess”

To many people unfamiliar with the Martial Art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it may seem like 2 combatants rolling around on the ground trying to “out muscle” each other until one of them “taps out” to a finishing hold or choke. To the contrary, it is a game of skill using leverage, timing and strategy to lead your opponent down a path of no return. Just as in chess, each “player” makes a move and then that move is countered until one can no longer counter and there is a win by checkmate (or in BJJ, a submission).  The tides can turn from offense to defense with one slight mistake. Sometimes it’s a game of inches, sometimes of speed, and yes even sometimes of strength, but in the end it will always be skill that ensures a win.

The magic number…..10,000 Do you have it in you?

Mixed martial arts is just like any other sports endeavor. It takes patience, practice and determination to pursue your personal best. You don’t become an expert overnight……………………….
10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert? That’s a lot of hours, right? So does this mean, if you are not a born athlete, you can become great with hours and hours of practice? Is this what sets an elite athlete apart from a mediocre athlete? Or are they just born with gifted, had the perfect parents who bequeathed them with the right genes to excel, raised in the right environment?
Well, according to Dr. Ericsson‘s research, it could just plainly be that elite athletes are determined and willing to put in the hours of practice and make sacrifices in order to perfect their chosen field of love.
“But determination is also a huge component of success. You have to love what you do in order to put in the roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice that Anders Ericsson’s famous research indicates is needed to become an expert”
APA. What does it take psychologically to be an elite athlete? Is it all about training and natural gifts or is personality key?
Dr. Murphy. That’s a great question, and if we knew the real answer, we’d be able to develop more Olympic champions. Definitely, talent is key. You need to have physical abilities to excel in a sport and speed, strength, endurance and coordination are vital. But determination is also a huge component of success. You have to love what you do in order to put in the roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice that Anders Ericsson’s famous research indicates is needed to become an expert. But I think many different types of personalities can become successful Olympians. Certainly we see a wide variety of personality types on the USA Olympic team.
